Leisure Activities
12 January 2017 18:47

Last Saturday evening we decided to go out for a meal. A new leisure complex has opened in Southampton city centre and we thought we would try one of the restaurants there. We didn’t book a table – we didn’t know what was there, and didn’t know what we wanted. And anyway, this is austerity, Brexit-looking Britain. No one has any money - or those that do are afraid to spend it. We’ve just had Christmas. Jamie Oliver is closing eight if his restaurants owing to lack of custom. There will be loads of room.

There wasn’t. All twelve-plus restaurants in the leisure complex were full. The best we could get was “about a 45-minute wait”. But we did get a good idea of what was on offer for future reference – French, Thai, Italian, Brazilian, Mexican … pretty much any type of food you would want.

This Saturday’s entertainment (in part of my bid to avoid having to watch “Shine On Take That” or whatever it’s called) is a trip to the theatre. The real, grown-up, professional theatre. We booked the tickets only a couple of days ago. We were deliberating whether to take the Sprogs (well, one of the sprogs) or whether she would be better off staying home to do homework and/or clean the rat cage (but probably procrastinate on both). “No, “ CS3 piped up, “you two can go on your own. You should treat yourselves”. Wasn’t that lovely?

Some friends went on holiday recently and booked a car from the airport. Because the plane was landing late evening they checked that the car hire desk would be open when they arrived. “Yes, we are open till midnight” they were told.

So they were somewhat perturbed on arrival at 10:30 to find that the car hire desk closed at 09:00. They had to spend £75 on a hotel room. In the morning the car hire company were full of apology, and offered to make amends by giving them a higher band car and a sat-nav for the week.
“That was great,” they enthusiastically related, “because the extra value of the car plus the sat-nav worked out at more than £75”.

I didn’t point out that because these weren’t anything they had originally wanted, they hadn’t been compensated for anything and were actually still £75 down on the deal.

Of course we didn't starve - we found a restaurant with space a short walk away
