About Me

Little shop of horrors
18 May 2014 19:28

Wow, it's almost ten days since I last updated. I've been busy. Not busy doing things that are worth writing about; but busy trying to fit everything into the day. Mum visited for a few days, then went away for a few days, then came back and now has gone away again. She's back on Friday for a week. I've taken a week off work then to take her out and about.

Oh, and I had a day of sick. Yes, me, sick. I don't do sick days. But I felt ill enough on Tuesday morning to wonder whether I should take the day off. Now, if I get to wondering whether I should take the day off it's probably got to the stage that I should. And I didn't feel like eating breakfast which is a sure sign that I am ill. I phoned my boss to say I wouldn't be in and crawled back to bed where I stayed until after 4.00. I got up, had a shower, a cup of tea and slice of toast. That was long enough for me to decide that being up wasn't that great an idea, so went back to bed.

And I didn't even do any reading. I just lay there, listening to the radio and dozing. It must have done me some good though, as I felt a lot better on Wednesday - apart from a sore back from lying in bed for so long.

Someone put some jars of honey in the coffee room at work, with a note explaining they were from her bees and were for sale for £4 per jar. That struck me as a bit expensive, but I have no idea what the standard price for a jar of honey is.

European elections this week. I've already voted (postal vote because I'm too busy to walk to the polling station). I can't believe that so many people want to stand for election; the ballot paper went on and on. I've never heard of most of the parties - and can't help thinking that some of them have deliberately chosen names and/or slogans that are very similar to others: An Independence from Europe ("UK Independence Now"); British National Party ("Because we can make Britain better" - yeah, right. No pun intended)); Christian People's Alliance; Conservative Party ("For real change in Europe"); English Democrats ("I'm English, NOT British, Not European"); Green Party; Harmony Party ("Zero Immigration, Anti E.U, Pro Jobs"); Labour Party; Liberal Democrats ("Liberal Democrat" ' how long did they take to come up with that slogan?); Liberty Great Britain ("Faithful to tradition, revolutionary in outlook"); The Peace Party ("Non-violence, Justice, Environment"); The Roman party.Ave; The Socialist Party of Great Britain ("World Socialist Movement"); Standing at the Back Dressed Stupidly and Looking Stupid Party; UK Independence Party (UKIP) ; YOURVoice ("yourvoiceparty.org.uk" - another inspiring slogan).

OK Standing at the Back Dressed Stupidly and Looking Stupid Party wasn't really on the ballot paper - that was from Blackadder. But they do have the same colours as UKIP so draw your own conclusions.

It's also local council elections. A leaflet for one party stated "Vote thisParty you get thisParty" - which may or may not be an inducement to vote for them. But it then went on: "I will work for you, my residents, not under party Political direction". So shouldn't that be "Vote for thisParty you get an independent"?

"Heather Rabbatts, the only(?) woman on the Football Association's board, has said that the Premier League has a "closed culture of sexism". She presumably went on to advocate that the Pope was a catholic and that bears poo in the woods.

Grocery shopping yesterday morning, and at the checkout I proudly handed over my voucher to get £10 off. "It's out of date" the cashier pointed out. What? But I carefully selected the voucher that was valid 12th to 19th before going out. "Yes, but that was 19th April". Oh well, I've got another one that will give me double nectar points. "Sorry, that one's out of date too."
