Second Easter break
13 April 2015 21:53

For the second part of our Easter break we went up north to visit family (specifically CGF's Bro, though we also dropped in on The Ageds for lunch on the way up).

We went to the seaside! Ok, that wasn't our first choice. Our first choice had been to look at some seals, but it turned out that we got there at the wrong time of day, the wrong time of year, and without binoculars, so there were no seals to be seen. So we went to Cleethorpes instead.

Cleethorpes is a strange place for the seaside because the sea isn't by the side. At least, it wasn't when we were there. The beach is very flat, so when the tide goes out, it really does go out.

Undaunted, the younglings and I set of on an intrepid "Expedition to find the sea". It was a bit like a lion hunt. We squilch-squelched through mud; we splish-splashed through streams; and we pitter-pattered across sand. After about 20 minutes, CGF and her bro realised "oh, we've left Ruby looking after the younglings again"

When we went to Oxford last weekend we took the park and ride bus into the city centre (it’s the best way to get there. Oxford hates cars and parking charges are extortionate. Park and Ride cost us £6.50 for the entire day. And the bus has its own lane that bypasses the traffic queues and (in some cases) traffic lights). We were first on, so I made for the stairs. "You're not going upstairs are you?" asked CGF. "But of course – the best place to travel on a double-decker – front seat, top deck". Apparently, if you haven't grown up by the time you reach 50, you don't have to. I'm planning on not having to.

On the way back, a couple of sproglets were sitting in a seat near us (with parents on the seat behind them). The smaller of the two was being bounced around a fair bit by the jolting of the bus, and eventually the inevitable happened and she bounced out of the seat and onto the floor. No major damage done (to bus or sproglet) though it did induce the mother to make a half-hearted attempt to restrain the child by reaching her arm around to hold her in place - except when she needed to put a hair band in her hair. Good to see that she rated her appearance as more important than the safety of her child.

This weekend we have been car searching - for CGF. We had seen details of three cards that were worth a look, and it turned out to be a goldilocks sort of day. The first was too small; the second was too big; but the third was just right – and about £1000 cheaper.

I gave CGF's lawn the first cut of the season. I took the washing line out of its hole, but when I came to put it back I couldn't find the hole. I needed to enlist the help of three teenagers to hunt round the lawn. They found it quite entertaining.

Strange how children can be so engrossed in a computer that they can’t hear messages like “go and do the washing up”, “go and have a shower”, and “go to bed”, but prick up their ears at the quietest mention of a chocolate Easter egg!
