About Me

Three weeks
22 January 2018 22:05

Another busy few weeks have shot by; I'm not sure what I've been doing to be so busy, but I've gone through several Fridays thinking "I'll do these jobs this weekend" and several Sundays thinking "ok, so I didn't get those jobs done".

But I’ve sold my flat (US Condo)! Yippee! OK, if I’m technical here, I’ve accepted an offer. Still got all the legal and financial rigmarole to go through before I’ve actually sold it. It was a reasonable offer, all thing considered. Lower than the asking price (but I always thought that was too high), but a little higher than the minimum I would have accepted. We need to get The Future Mrs Barefoot’s house valued, but my rough sketch ballpark figures suggest that it is enough.

We went to see Cinderella on Friday – the musical that is, not the fictional person herself. No, I didn't know there was a musical version of Cinderella either; until the show started I thought we were going to see a pantomime. Can't say I was too disappointed to find out that it was a musical – proper musical too, Rodgers and Hammerstein.

It was an enjoyable performance – one of the many local am-dram companies. Keeping to the fairy-story origins, the set was designed as a bookshelf; the names of the books I hypothesised (and subsequently confirmed) were the names of "Cinderella" in different languages. One book was opened out, and pages were turned to effect the scenery changes. Quite a clever design, we thought.

CS3 wondered why everyone ignores the big plot hole in the story; why does the slipper not disappear at midnight? Good point.

It's been wet here in UK-land. So wet that Eastleigh parkrun has been cancelled a few times, and we've had to travel elsewhere for our Saturday morning running fix. Last weekend, I achieved my fastest time this year at Southampton – which sounds impressive, until you realise that we are only a few weeks into the year.

The Future Mrs Barefoot and I have also been for a couple of extra runs on Sundays – just for the fun of it. I'm not sure how much fun running is when it is 5 degrees and raining, but never mind.

I think that "running" needs to go with "cooking" and "shopping" in the list of things that couples shouldn't do together. The trouble is that my natural running pace is a lot faster than The Future Mrs Barefoot's and even when I am trying to run slowly I have to add loops and detours so she can catch up. Not good, I was told, for morale and general willingness to run.

What do runners think about when they run? I think this video pretty well sums it up and deserves wider circulation.

Saturday evening we went to the annual parkrun party. Food and drink; dancing and socialising. We had a good time.

The dancing was to a silent disco – you wear wireless headphones to hear the music. There are three channels (so when the equipment starts whining, you change to a different channel and don't have to hear Taylor Swift any more) and it's quite weird watching people dance to completely different beats.

The headphones have coloured lights to show which channel they are tuned to, so you can see what other people are listening to – but of course, can't see what you are listening to without taking the phones off!

Because it was a silent disco, I felt the need to communicate in sign language. I know very little sign language. The few words I do know include "green", "police" and "car". I seldom, if ever, need to sign; it is this that makes me sad. And when I do then there isn't a green police car around, but I would if I did and there were. (apologies to Flanders and Swann). I was, however, able to sign something that almost said "ELO on Green" at one point (I messed up my vowels and said "ELI on Green").

We've booked a weekend away in a couple of weeks’ time. We're going abroad – proper abroad, flying to somewhere outside the EU. Even so, it's only a short flight – I think the plane will be on the apron for longer than it will be in the air. They also speak English there, and use British currency,

OK, we're going to Jersey. But it is overseas (you try walking there), outside the UK and not in the EU. It is proper abroad.

I'm going there on business – to deliver a training course – but the company have agreed to let me take The Future Mrs Barefoot, if I pay her costs.
