About Me

Brain Fade
27 January 2019 12:14

Mrs Barefoot has a group of friends known as “the mum friends”, who all have children of the same age and have known each other since pre-school days (their children’s pre-school days, not their own. Try to keep up). They meet up every couple of months or so for a girly night out, but every so often they invite the husbands along too.

We had one of those evenings last weekend – a gin and whisky evening. One of the couples have a good selection of malt whiskies (his job takes him to Scotland from time to time, so he uses these opportunities to add to his collection), and we all took along various types of gin.

In the afternoon we went to the local supermarket to select a distinctive bottle of gin. We settled on one with a blue hue that would turn pink when tonic was added. Imagine our surprise when we got there and discovered that the host had bough the same brand! But he was equally surprised, as he thought the brand was available only in Scotland. “No – we found it at the local discount supermarket”.

The hosts live the other side of Eastleigh so we decided to get the train there. The train turned out to be a replacement bus service (it was really bumpy driving over all those sleepers) but sitting on the top deck meant we could look in all the upper floor windows that you don’t see from ground level.

Unfortunately, on our way home we missed the last bus. We saw it pull out of the station as we reached the top of the footbridge. Still, at least we saw it – had we been a few seconds later we wouldn’t have known whether we’d missed it or whether it was running late. And at least it wasn’t too far to walk home.

My journey to work takes about an hour and is roughly 50:50 on major and minor roads. It’s not unexpected to get delayed from time to time by roadworks, breakdowns, accidents etc. – but usually on the major roads.

Thursday was an exception. Two delays, and both on the minor roads. The first 20 minutes was from roadworks (not that I saw any roadwork), and the second from an accident that had blocked the entire road – I had to turn around and find a diversion.

The most annoying bit was that I’d been stuck behind a slow driver for miles and had only just manged to overtake. When we turned around, that car ended up in front of me again – for another five miles!

I bought a coffee and cake from Costa this morning, and added “to takeaway” to my order.

“do you want the cake to take way too?” asked the server.

Why would I take a coffee away, but eat the cake in-store?

In the supermarket this evening, we overheard a mother asking her young (under 5) child “what would you like Mummy to make you for dinner?”

When I was a kid it was “this is what Mummy’s giving you for dinner. Like it or lump it”.
